Using Words Like a Little Girl

The other day we were driving to kids school and I had the Christmas mix in.  "Frosty the Snowman" came up and that was one of the first songs Ella had learned, so we started singing.  All of a sudden, in echo to the song, I hear 'Hap-Py' from the backseat--from Callie--who is taking her sweet time adding to her lexicon.  "That's right!  Good job Callie!"  and we said it again, and both me and Ella giggled.

All that to say that Callie is thrilled that words are popping out of her little mouth just right and low and behold she is being understood.  All I can say is it must be really frustrating the first few times when anyone chances saying a word and then has it come out wrong or misunderstood.

Callie really takes special delight in saying...or shouting, or singing over and over Eyyy-l-lla.  Ella is thrilled most of the time.  Callie finds pictures of Ella to point out to us and in the morning she sometimes bellows 'Elllla' before she shouts 'mommy' or 'daddy.'  I'm loving that she has tried two syllable words before she expands the one syllable word category.  She still says 'up' but now 'please' is added in and sometimes it sounds like 'up-pea'.

Callie also has learned the names for facial features and takes great joy in pointing out her eyes and then poking mine and saying 'eye.'  She giggles as she tries to put her finger up my nose.  She even tried something that sounded like 'han' tonight.  She showed her daddy on her dolly Suzi.  She is really loving to the dolls too, trying to feed them a bottle that won't fit in their mouth.

When Ella and I made a Christmas list last night, she included getting things for her to play Santa with others and she wanted to get Callie a doll with a bottle that fits its mouth.  Very sweet.

  1. Experiencing a child learning to speak is one the most delightful times in parenthood, their personalities receal themselves in a fuller way! And, having a caring older sister, very sweet!

  2. I am treasuring the words as they come slowly too. Enjoying the little songs and melody I hear from the backseat. Ella sounds like the perfect big sister.
So thankful for the Holy Spirit....our interpreter. Thank you for reminding me of this. Even if I dont get it all right..... he is there, and God hears/knows.
